Is filler for men still a taboo?

Facial aesthetics for men does carry a degree of taboo, says Dr Oli Curwen. About half his patients are men, so he sees it more than most. Women, he finds, will happily talk about treatment openly. “Whereas men do hold their cards close to their chest,” he says.

Worldwide, about one in seven filler treatments in 2024 was for a man, according to the ISAPS global survey. At Dr Oli’s clinic, about half of all patients are men.

He compares it with the gym. “If you’re going to the gym to make your body look good, what are you doing to help your face? And filler is the good way to do that.”

What do men want to know before their first appointment?

Many men want Dr Oli’s opinion before they name a treatment. Some are brought in by a partner, and others find him on Instagram. “They often ask for my opinion first,” he says, so they arrive without a set idea of what they want.

That suits the way the clinic works. Every new patient at Dr Oli Aesthetics starts with a paid consultation, which covers your medical history, what is bothering you and an assessment of your face. You leave with a written plan with costs.

He expects nerves. “Filler can be daunting, and I think that’s a healthy approach,” he says.

Which areas do men most often treat with filler?

Men most often ask about the jawline, and Dr Oli points them to the chin as well.

“Most men will come in asking about a jawline, but actually we need to point out the importance of the chin in creating balance,” he says. Whenever he treats a jawline, he addresses the chin at the same time. His guide to chin filler explains why.

Jawline filler at Dr Oli Aesthetics takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Dr Oli often uses a blunt-tipped cannula there.

Swelling settles in 24 to 48 hours, and results last 12 to 18 months.

Can filler help a face that looks gaunt after weight-loss medication?

Often, yes. A little filler in the cheeks or temples brings back some of the volume that weight-loss medication has taken from the face.

More recently, he is seeing many more men on weight-loss medication who feel they look gaunt and tired. “And so a bit of carefully placed cheek filler or temple filler goes a long way,” he says.

Faces often lose volume as weight comes off. In a 2026 survey of people on medical weight-loss treatment, half of those who lost more than 20% of their body weight said their face had less volume.

Filler returns “that feeling of strength, muscle, and weight to the face” that the medication may have removed, he says. “These are where I get the happiest results, the most natural.”

Will anyone be able to tell you’ve had filler?

Dr Oli plans filler for men so people notice a rested, stronger face and nothing else.

Dr Oli wants the face to look natural and strong. “We want the face to look like you’ve had nothing done,” he says. For men on weight-loss medication, he describes the work as “subtle volume replacement and augmentation” with no drastic change.

Dr Oli uses a little less filler the first time and reviews you at 2 weeks, once any swelling has gone. Adding more is simple, while taking filler away means dissolving it with an enzyme, which the clinic keeps on site.

How much downtime should men plan for after filler?

Downtime after jaw, chin and cheek filler is short, and Dr Oli Aesthetics asks you to avoid hard exercise, including the gym, for 24 hours.

  • Avoid pressure, massage and hard exercise on the treated area for 24 hours.
  • Swelling along the jaw, chin and cheeks usually settles in 24 to 48 hours, sometimes with a small bruise.
  • If this is your first filler, there is a gap of at least 7 days between your consultation and treatment.

To prepare, avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamin E, fish oil and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours, to lower the risk of bruising.

Filler treatment takes place at UNTIL Soho and UNTIL Marylebone. You can see the main areas Dr Oli treats on the dermal fillers page, and read how he handles filler risks in his guide to safety.

Frequently asked questions

How many of Dr Oli Curwen's patients are men?

About half. Dr Oli Curwen has roughly a 50-50 spread of men to women at Dr Oli Aesthetics, so he sees the taboo men feel about treatment more than most. Some men are brought in by a partner or find him on Instagram, and they often ask for his opinion before naming a treatment.

Do I need to know which treatment I want before I book?

No. Many men who see Dr Oli Curwen arrive with no specific treatment in mind and ask for his opinion first. The consultation at Dr Oli Aesthetics covers your face as a whole and ends with a written plan with costs, so you can decide in your own time.

Can I go to the gym after filler?

Wait 24 hours. Dr Oli Aesthetics asks you to avoid hard exercise, pressure and massage on the treated area for 24 hours after filler. Swelling along the jaw, chin and cheeks usually settles in 24 to 48 hours, sometimes with a small bruise.

Can filler help if weight-loss medication has made my face look gaunt?

Often, yes. Dr Oli Curwen sees more men whose faces look gaunt and tired after weight-loss medication. For them, a little cheek or temple filler can bring back a sense of strength and fullness. He describes these as his happiest and most natural results.

Will people be able to tell I have had filler?

The aim at Dr Oli Aesthetics is a face that looks natural and strong, as if you have had nothing done. Dr Oli uses a little less filler the first time and reviews you at 2 weeks, because adding more is simple and taking it away means dissolving it.
