Not just for wrinkles…
How it works
Botulinum Toxin is a prescribed medication that works by blocking signals to the injected muscle, causing relaxation.
These injections are most commonly used to relax muscles in the face, allowing wrinkles to soften, and for fine lines to disappear.
The most popular area for this treatment is within the upper face ‘three zones’, made up of the forehead, frown and crow’s feet. It can also be used to reduce pebbling of the chin, evert the upper lip ‘lip flip’, and slim the nose.
Injections within the platysma bands of the neck can reduce the appearance of bow-stringing, which can often make the neck appear older.
Other uses
As well as in the face, toxin injections can be used for a range of alternative treatments.
Bruxism (teeth grinding), can be performed with injections into the muscle of the jaw. This can reduce overnight teeth clenching, and alleviate morning headaches caused by grinding of the teeth.
Jawline slimming is possible with repeated injections into the hypertrophied (over-grown) muscle of the jaw.
Migraines that are resistant to medications, or if you suffer from more than 15 days of migraines a month, can be treated with botulinum toxin injections into the scalp. This is a NICE approved treatment, with excellent results. On average, patients notice an effect within 2-3 weeks of treatment.
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is a condition that affects a very wide range of people. Typically affecting the back, armpits, palms and soles, hyperhidrosis can cause irritation of the skin, and can also be a source of embarrassment within social situations. Almost all parts of the body can be targeted, with good results.
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic recurrent condition that can lead to abscess within the skin. Intradermal injections of toxin can reduce sweat formation, and has been shown to reduce the incidence of acute infections. Clinical trials have shown botulinum toxin to improve quality of life in patients living with HS. This treatment is not yet available on the NHS.
